Improvements Coming to Niagara State Parks

Officials gathered recently to throw a ceremonial switch to mark the completion of a $1.3 million dollar electrical upgrade at Fort Niagara State Park. The project completes work that was designed to update the park's unpredictable power supply system.

"The electrical system dates back to when this was a military base," says Mark Thomas, Western District Director for New York State Parks. The improvements were paid for with money that was part of the relicenising of the New York Power Project and approved by the Niagara River Greenway.

At Niagara Falls State Park, $25-million dollars has been allocated to improve walkways, the trolley system, and elevators at the Cave of the Winds.Starting after Labor Day, Luna and Three Sisters Island will be closed for 8-months as work is done to improve those areas.

Plans are also in the works to make other improvements at Prospect Point.Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo made tourism a priority and called for a major investment in the NYS Park system. The Red Coach is located just 500 yards from the American Falls, and Niagara Falls State Park.
