Frozen Falls

No matter what you want to call it the Siberian Express, a Polar Vortex or an Arctic Blast the record-breaking cold temperatures have turned Niagara Falls into frozen winter wonderland. Reports of the falls freezing over have fascinated people all over the world. Newspapers and TV stations have been a buzz with photo and videos of this must see event.

Back in January, well-known Canadian ice climber Will Gadd conquered the northernmost part of Horseshoe Falls, beginning at the frozen river base of Niagara River and climbing to Terrapin Point on Goat Island. Clawing his way to the top all the while the mighty Niagara rushed by at speeds of nearly 70 mph, with an estimated 150,000 tons of water pouring over the crest every minute right next to him.

Every night guest have the chance to experience Niagara Falls in a new way with the Falls illumination. A wonderful light show that highlight the falls beautiful ice formations. So make plans to spend the whole day.

There's still plenty of time to witness this sight. The National Weather Service says extremely cold arctic air is on the horizon and this will allow for the expansion of the ice coverage in days to come. Why not plan a visit today.
Call the Red Coach Inn at 716-282-1459 or check us out online at  http://www.redcoach.com/  we are just 500 yards the American Falls.

The Greater Niagara Fishing & Outdoor Expo
January 23-25, 2015

An Outdoors Paradise

The Greater Niagara Region is home to one of the most diverse and spectacular freshwater sport fisheries on the planet. The Niagara River, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are all within casting distance for salmon, trout, bass, walleye, muskellunge and so much more. You can fish for many of the species year-round.

Sport fishing opportunities in Western New York and Southern Ontario are endless. In 2012, Olcott Beach in the Town of Newfane was recognized by the World Fishing Network as the Ultimate Fishing Town after a nationwide vote. While we won’t diminish the magnitude of that feat, the fishing there is only a small piece of our fishing tackle box. The glamour fish – the one that attracts the most attention from the angling fraternity – is the Chinook or King salmon in Lake Ontario. According to the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation, the fishing for salmon the last 12 years was the best it’s ever been in the 28 year history of the lake creel census! Yes, it’s that good, with fish regularly topping the 30 pound mark. Bring your own boat or hire a charter captain – we have the access and the professional fleet to meet your every need.

If you're land bound, there is great shore fishing along the Niagara Gorge; Burt Dam and 18 Mile Creek, as well as other Great Lakes (Erie and Ontario) tributaries; the piers at Wilson and Olcott; Buffalo and Dunkirk; the NYPA Fishing Platform in Devil’s Hole and power reservoir; the Erie Canal; and a long list of other area hot spots. In fact, pick up a copy of the Greater Niagara Hot Spot Fishing Map to help plan your adventure. A weekly fishing report is currently recorded at 1-877-FALLS-US and is also on the website at www.niagara-usa.com.

Niagara USA is also an excellent area for birding, recognized internationally as an Important Bird Area. A Niagara River Greenway Corridor is currently being developed from Buffalo to Youngstown. Add in biking, hiking, boating and all the paddle sports to satisfy your outdoor needs. The best place to be to find out about all of this information? The Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo set for Jan. 23-25, 2015 of course!

5 Interesting Thankgiving Facts

We all love celebrating Thanksgiving.
Here are some interesting facts about our beloved holiday.

The first American Thanksgiving was held by approximately
50 Plymouth pilgrims and approximately 90 neighboring
 Wampanoag Indians (Native Americans)
in Autumn of 1621 in Massachusetts.
 Thanksgiving celebrations were
pretty sporadic and random after that.

The first Thanksgiving feast lasted an entire 3 days.

In 1777 to 1783, the US Congress proclaimed Thanksgiving an annual celebration to be held each December.

Thanksgiving as a national holiday finally stuck when Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday to be held the last Thursday in November...but this was never signed as a law. It wasn't until President Roosevelt signed a bill in 1941 sanctifying Thanksgiving as the 4th Thursday of every November as a national public holiday.

Three towns in the U.S. take their name from the traditional Thanksgiving bird, including Turkey, Texas (pop. 465); Turkey Creek, Louisiana (pop. 363); and Turkey, North Carolina (pop. 270).
